; As you’ll see from her sash, Bala is also being used as a play on Baja.It’s also an interesting poster because it contains the implicit promise of a beauty queen being involved in gunplay, either in front or, more likely behind the gun, and those are just the kind of generic tropes you could sell to a reader of Nuts or Zoo magazines.
Yet, at the same time, the poise and stillness of the design goes some way to indicating, and honestly so, that this film won’t be wall-to-wall Bayhem.
When I met and spoke to the film’s director, Gerardo Naranjo, and star, Stephanie Sigman, we spoke about these ideas, and much more too. I was particularly interested in the film’s unusual form, which comprises longer tracking shots, very choreographed staging and a lot steadiness where, conventionally, the camera would zip around or the editor would cut the action into fragments; we were also obliged to talk about the various social representations in the film, and how they have been received, as the film has caused a lot of controversy back home in Mexico.
