Ford Focus electric priced higher than other plug-ins
Ford just unveiled the price on the all-electric version of its Focus and our eyes are popping out of our head. At $39,200, plus a $795 destination fee, it's way more expensive than the competition.
Ford opened the order banks today for its launch markets -- California, New York and New Jersey -- where the car will go on sale by the end of the year. Another 15 markets are getting the EV early next year. But more than $40,000 for a Ford compact without an engine, we're not expecting potential buyers are elbowing their way into the order queue.
For another $2,000, buyers could order a Chevrolet Volt, a plug-in with unlimited range due to its gas engine.
Consider where Focus electric stands in terms of its all-electric competition. Nissan Leaf starts at $35,200, and the Mitsubishi i starts at $29,125. The 2012 Coda EV, which recently went on sale and is being touted as having more than a 100-mile, real-world range, costs $44,900. Currently, that makes the Ford Focus the most expensive of the mainstream electric cars.
