Joe McAfee's nickname around the Marmora Volunteer Fire Company is "Mugsy," because of the more than 2,000 porcelain fire company beer mugs he has collected over 25 years.
Each mug commemorates a new truck for a New Jersey fire company or a firefighters convention, he said. All are housed in a museum-like room in the home the 40-year-old shares with his parents, Jim and Sandy, in the Beesleys Point section of Upper Township.
McAfee has a developmental disability but has contributed so much to the fire company that it awarded him Firefighter of the Year about a decade ago.
"When they land the helicopter (for serious accidents), I'm usually the one who puts the cones out" to guide the craft down, said the 20-year volunteer. He also goes out on regular calls, cleans and prepares equipment, and keeps the company's history, he said. McAfee dresses up as Santa Claus on Christmas Eve, riding around town on the firetruck, and as Sparky the Fire Dog during Fire Prevention Month in October.
